Almost everything that goes wrong here is geography: the wrong car park, the wrong farm gate, or a train station that is nowhere near the town. This page puts every meeting address in order of how far it is from the top. Start your montepulciano city tour where you think it starts.
Where Montepulciano is
The town sits on a ridge at about 605 metres, in the Valdichiana Senese in the Province of Siena. The Val d'Orcia is across the valley to the west, not underneath you. This is one of the few hill towns here that sits outside that UNESCO property, which is why so many Val d'Orcia day trips add it.
Chianciano Terme is the nearest town of any size and Pienza is the next ridge west. Siena, Florence and Rome all work as a day out, because the A1 runs down the valley below you. The one thing you cannot do is arrive at a station in the town.
There is no station in the town
There is a station called Montepulciano. It is not here. It stands down on the plain in the frazione of Montepulciano Stazione, on the Siena–Chiusi line. That is about 7.8 km from Piazza Grande in a straight line, and a good deal further by road. From there you take a bus or a taxi to the foot of the hill, and then you climb.
A traveller who did exactly that set out the drill in a review. You cab or bus to the base of the town, then walk up or take a shuttle the rest of the way. So if you are arriving by train with luggage, plan that last leg before you book. The simpler answer is a coach day from Rome or Florence, which does the driving for you.
The no-car zone, in the operators' own words
The old town is closed to traffic, and the people who meet you up there are the ones who say so most clearly. One cellar's own booking page reads: the cellar is located in the center of Montepulciano, a no-car zone, and it names Parking San Donato or Parking P8. The bike shop on Via Ricci says its nearest free parking is Parking 8. The private walk lists Parcheggio 8, 7, 6 and San Donato as the closest.

Two addresses, one church, two operators. Via
Madonna della Querce 6 and 6/A are the same farm sold by two different companies at two
different prices. Check which is on your confirmation before you set out, and carry a
phone number: a party in the reviews walked forty minutes to the
wrong door and lost the day.
The climb from each car park
All four of the car parks the operators name sit below the walls, and all four mean a climb. Plan for the gradient rather than the distance. Porta al Prato to Piazza Grande is perhaps twenty-five minutes of walking, and it rises the whole way.
- Parking 8 and Parcheggio 7. The pair the operators name most often, and the closest to the Via Ricci addresses at the top.
- Parcheggio 6. Lower again, and the easiest to find a space in on a busy day. Add several minutes of climbing.
- Parcheggio San Donato. The one named for arrivals from the west, and the walk in is longer but gentler.
- A blue badge. With one you may drive up to the square and use a disabled space when one is free. Everyone else parks below.
Give yourself twenty minutes more than the walk needs if you are meeting a guide at the top. Parking has cost people the start of a tour here. One cellar moved a late party straight on to its next slot, which was good of them — book a mid-morning start and you will not need that kindness.

Questions about getting here
Is there a railway station in Montepulciano?
Not in the town. The station that carries its name sits down on the plain, so plan on a car, a coach day or a bus up from the nearest railhead. Every listing here that starts somewhere else brings you in by road.
Where do I park?
Below the walls. Parking 8 and San Donato are the two the operators name in their own meeting-point text, and both of them mean a climb. Leave time for it if you are meeting a guide at the top.
Can I drive into the old town?
No. It is a no-car zone, and the operators give the same answer in their own meeting-point text: park at San Donato or P8 and walk up. Every car park is below the walls.
Is the walk up steep?
Yes. Porta al Prato to Piazza Grande climbs the whole way, and a reviewer on a Florence coach day calls it a nice hard hike. Allow more time than the distance suggests, and a good deal more in August.
Do the tours include hotel pickup?
Mostly not. Where it exists it is an option rather than the default, and the listings that exclude it say so in their own words. Assume you are meeting at the address on your confirmation.
